Age Management

Age management, in the context aged2excel interprets and uses the framework, is a holistic approach to managing lifelong workability for the individual. Developed by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health - FIOH and widely used in Finland, age management, through its various interventions is proving to be a very effective support strategy.

In the UK, TAEN – The Age and Employment Network have been leading the introduction of age management and workability through national and regional seminars and awareness programmes.

Age management can be aimed at three different levels:

  • The Individual
  • The Enterprise
  • Society

Each level will have its own issues, interventions and solutions, but each will be inextricably linked.

UK Business Context

The biggest challenge facing society, the economy and business, not withstanding the current impact of the recession, is demographic change. The UK, along with most of Europe, is experiencing significant and long term changes to the population age profile. Falling birth rates, technology advances in disease management and a host of other complex societal changes, mean that while the over 50’s population is increasing; the younger age population is decreasing.

Some key demographic facts can be viewed on the aged2excel home page and are largely self explanatory. However, it is not clear how the UK business community can minimise the detrimental impact of the ageing population, while maintaining productivity, ensuring capacity capability, retaining knowledge capital, reducing costs and maximising employment opportunities, i.e. managing demographic risk and creating sustainable competitive advantage.

Despite overwhelming evidence that employing people from the ageing talent pool can and does provide real and measurable business benefits, there appears to be reluctance by employers to grasp this huge opportunity. aged2excel hopes to play its part in improving this situation.

In the meantime, for employers engaged in widening their recruitment nets, to include the ageing labour force and those that have yet to make that important leap of faith, there is the age management framework.

aged2excel are well positioned to support, individuals, business and the wider community in age management techniques.
