Where do I start?
Not many people like to admit they are scared, but it is an
undeniable facet of work life that we fear job change. This
is founded on a number of typical ‘negative' self beliefs
that unfortunately haunt many of us, regardless of our position
or role:
- If I move now, it may be from the frying pan to the frier!
- What if the grass isn't greener in the other side!
- I'm too old now to re-train for something new
- There's no such thing as a ‘job I love' and earning a
good living too
- What if I fail to live up to expectations; what if I'm
just not good enough
- Will my Pension be affected in a negative way?
There are many other such negative beliefs and usually they
place career change in a much less than positive light. If
we don't analyse these and other self beliefs, we may not
have the confidence to move on.
It is important to identify:
- Your needs, wants and aspirations, against your skills,
experience and talents
- Once identified, you need to work out how best to use
them
- Next stage is identify how and which organisations might
use your specific skills set
What tools can I use to help me achieve the above?
There are many management tools you can use, as an example:
- Self assessment or SWOT – identify your strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities and threats – be honest to yourself; do this
on a regular basis. Don't be afraid to be critical, but
be fair to yourself
- Create a personal development plan – set goals, objectives
and identify training needs; where possible add date deadlines
to ensure you do something about your situation ….. now
- Where you have identified training, see what is available
free, e.g. Local Business Link or the Jobcentre Plus.
Remember that management of your career is largely in your
hands. Do not leave this critical activity to someone else
– only you know what you want and need.
By taking control yourself, you will:
Obtain a better role for yourself
Feel more confident and positive
about change
Become more comfortable about continuous self
assessment
Achieve a much better career and lifestyle
Feel happier and enthusiastic about life in
general
Business also benefits
Having established in your own mind what skills, experience
and talents you have, you immediately raise your game and
focus on positive self belief; this is highly infectious and
whether you are looking for a new job or continue in your
current organisation, the positive change in your attitude
will help both you and the organisation that has the good
fortune to employ you.
