Effective recruitment and retention is critical to sustained cost reduction and control. The attraction, recruitment, selection and retention of the mid to later life age groups can be difficult given the misconceptions that abound. To facilitate real and measurable improvements in this critical area, businesses should focus effort on the following:
- Culture and attitude - particularly aimed at team leader and mid management levels where the highest degree of personal mentoring, coaching and leadership takes place
- Advertising - appropriate wording, images and key messages that embrace the age legislation and age positive behaviours
- Widen recruitment net to include age and employment supporting agencies and long term unemployed, for example Incapacity Benefit claimants, the disabled, lone parents and members of the BME community
- De-emphasis of age in all HR processes and procedures, concentrating instead on a person's skills, competency and potential to fulfil the role required
aged2excel have been helping organisations since 2004 to improve their recruitment and retention strategies.
